The Scottsdale Prep Spartans (6-0) continued their dominant start to the season, beating the North Pointe Prep Falcons (1-6) 62-0 behind junior quarterback Tyler Johnson’s four total touchdowns.

The Spartans offense put up 62 points for the second straight game as the unit looked more multi-dimensional and assertive than any game this year. The Spartans’ run game was the best part of the night, as running back Ruben Ruyle ran in two more touchdowns to bring his total to six on the season. Ruyle is the team’s leading rusher, entering Friday’s game with 37 carries for 285 yards.

Ruyle credited his coaches letting him work through some mistakes from earlier in the season.

“I definitely credit our offensive coaches, just letting me hit the hole and progressing with me. Even with my two fumbles throughout these first six games, just allowing me to improve past that has made me better,” Ruyle said.

Johnson also had a huge part in the running game Friday, with the Spartans running multiple option plays and other offensive concepts that allowed Johnson to take off when need be.

“I definitely believe we can run just as well as we can pass. Coach (David Primavera) drew up some more run plays for me today, including that option play that I ran in for a touchdown. With all of the playmakers we have in the backfield, the run game can definitely be great,” Johnson said.

Despite how well the Spartans performed, Primavera said there’s always room for improvement.

“There were a few times where we were a little sloppy, especially in the first half. But whether it be just missed tackles or other areas of focus, we definitely took care of it in the second half and our kids played very hard,” Primavera said.

Senior wide receiver Devon Strader hauled in two more touchdowns to bring his season total to 10, which leads the team. Senior Carson Boyll continued to make plays all over the field, returning a punt 55 yards for a touchdown that capped off a 34-point first quarter for Scottsdale Prep.

The defense hasn’t allowed a point in over eight quarters and forced four more turnovers Friday, including two on downs.

The game marked the beginning of the second half of the season for the Spartans, with three of their next four games on the road. Primavera said he wants to treat every game as a playoff game.

“We’re trying to take every game as a playoff game. It is really important we come out hard and with energy. We’re a very talented team, so if we just play hard and put it all on the line every game we can win a lot of football games,” Primavera said.

Scottsdale Prep will return home to face Valley Lutheran on Oct. 15 before heading on the road to finish out the season.

North Pointe Prep visits Scottsdale Christian Academy on Oct. 15.
