The Westview High School Lady Knights volleyball team defeated Cesar Chavez High School in four sets on Tuesday and swept North Canyon High School on Wednesday. Exhaustion did not stop the Lady Knights from cruising to an easy third win back home Thursday night against winless Trevor G. Browne High School in three sets, 25-8, 25-5, 25-9.

This was the last non-region match for Westview who remains undefeated (7-0) outside of tournament play. The two teams have not met on the court since 2014.

Before the match, Westview head coach Alex Bybee shared her thoughts on playing a team with such a disparity of wins under its belt.

“We don’t worry about who’s on the other side of the net, but we focus on our side of the net,” Bybee said. “My goal for my team is that we play the same on our side of the net regardless of who’s on the other side.”

Bybee was impressed with the consistency of passes and serves from the Lady Knights during the match which she noted paved the way for more risk in offensive plays, especially during the second set.

“I definitely was giving them challenges throughout the game, so there were things I wanted them to work on, and they were focused on truly trying to meet them,” Bybee said. “We try to focus on the things we do well over here — our passes were good, our setting was good, and we had phenomenal serving [in] this game.”

Senior outside hitter Emysiah Matthews led the team with 12 kills followed by senior Lauren Tomeldon with eight for the Lady Knights. Senior hitter America Medal served five aces on 14 attempts, and Matthews followed with four aces on 17 attempts.

Senior libero Adrianna Elias finished off the night with 22 digs. Finally, stepping in for injured junior setter Dylan Cain, sophomore Amirrah Hicks and junior Madisyn Yates finished the match with 24 assists apiece.

Tomeldon noted that consistent passes led to great sets and success in kills for Westview.

“I told myself I have to pass before I can get a kill,” Tomeldon said, explaining that her focus was on defense first.

The teams played the first set pretty safely, with few aces or kills from either side of the net. The Lady Knights secured a nine-point run followed by an eight-point run with Hicks and Matthews serving consistently.

In the second set, Westview finished on a nine-point run with four aces from Medal. Matthews and Tomeldon each made half of their kills assisted by consistent sets. The Lady Knights capitalized on the communication errors and the open space between the front and back rows on the Lady Bruins’ side of the net.

Trevor G. Browne (0-6) finished the third set with its most points of all three, cleaning up some of the front row errors committed consistently in the first two sets, but not well enough to take the lead. Tomeldon jump-served three aces on six attempts, supported with wild cheers from the crowd, to finish the game with a third win in a row for Westview.

The Lady Knights have found nothing but success in the first half of their season but will start playing within the 6A Southwest region next week.

Westview assistant coach Chyna Carter noted that the team aims to clean up its defense most of all.

“Going into next week and so on, these are going to be pretty much their toughest games that they have, so being able to close the block, as well as defense covering behind the block, is going to be crucial,” Carter said.

Coach Bybee hopes the girls can get plenty of rest before their first region match at Tolleson Union High School Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Lady Bruins will face Maryvale High School at home in 6A Metro play on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
