Great execution in the transition game. Crisp passing to get good shots. Making a bunch of said shots. And consistent defense.
All added up to Hamilton throttling visiting Liberty, 75-51, in a 6A non-region boys basketball game at Hamilton.
Hamilton (6-3), No. 7 in Tuesday's fresh 6A power rankings, won its third game in a row. Three players took a bow with scintillating scoring efforts - Aaron Foote (24 points), Andrew Hinkle (21 points) and Kokea Makaila (18 points). On the other end, playing mostly zone, the Huskies tamped down on Liberty's high-scoring prowess limiting the Lions to a season-low 51 points. That's 38 points below their average. Liberty (9-2), ranked No. 5 in the latest power-rankings, dropped its second game in a row.
"It was offense against defense, a good matchup," Hamilton coach Doug Harris said. "It was about being able to getting out on their shooters and we did a great job of that. A lot of good decision making by our guys. on offense. They shared the ball and found the open man. Best basketball I've seen us play in a long time."
Foote was the long-range marksman and kept the heat on Liberty's ability to rally in the second half from a 36-24 deficit. Foote posted 22 of his 24 points in the second half. He connected on six threes (10 attempts), mostly from same spot right of the lane. Liberty had pared Hamilton's lead to 38-30 early in the third period, but that fizzled thanks to Foote's hot hand.
Hinkle and Makaila were the stalwarts of the first half. Strong rebounding led to a many transition baskets and the 6-foot-5 Makaila was on the finish of most of those. Makalia scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half. Hinkle tallied 14 of his 21 points in the first half, including seven shots in a row after missing his first two attempts. Most were 12 to 15 foot jumpers near the free-throw line.
Hamilton shot 57 percent from the field in the first half (16 of 28). Liberty managed 30 percent accuracy of all shots through the middle of the final quarter (16 of 54). Three-point shooting in that span was 9 of 3.
Senior Brett Chappell paced Liberty with 19 points, 13 in the second half. Senior Patrick Steitz was next with nine points. Senior and leading scorer Miles Guliford (16 ppg) was limited to two points. Liberty tries to stop its two-game skid Friday at Dobson while Hamilton's next game is Friday hosting Pinnacle.
