Hamilton earned its fourth chance at winning its first girls volleyball title on Thursday night ironically against Sunnyslope - team that has trophy case full of title hardware.

The second-seeded Huskies, one of two dominant teams this season in 6A, dispatched the 11th-seeded Vikings via sweep - 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 at Hamilton High.

Hamilton (16-2) returns to the title match for the first time since 2014 and will play #1 Perry (18-0) in the anticipated championship matchup on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Mesquite High School. Perry swept #4 Mountain View in its semfinal match. Perry handed Hamilton its only two losses in the regular season by scores of 3-2 and 3-1. The Pumas also are seeking their first volleyball title.

Sunnyslope, winners of nine championships since 2006 and 5A champs last season, finished 10-6. The Vikings moved up to 6A this year and coach Amber LeTarte's squad may have overachieved reaching the semis. Under LeTarte, Sunnyslope has won titles in 5A, Division II (5A equivalent), 4A Division I and 4A Division II.

Sunnyslope supplied plenty of want-to in trying for the upset, but Hamilton's overall talent was too much to overcome. It was the first meeting this season between the teams.

"I talked with other coaches who played them and they said you have to maintain focus," Hamilton coach Sharon Vanis, who has authored nothing but winning seasons since taking the reins in 2006. "If you lose focus they can make you pay. They served us aggressively. We had a bad stretch in the second set with a lot of aggressive mistakes that were OK. I was proud of our resilience which showed a few times."

Hamilton's attack is its primary strength. Juniors Jordan Middleton, Micah Gryniewicz and senior Jahara Campbell are the main weapons and that was no different this night. Gryniewicz led in kills with 15, Middleton had 11 and Campbell chipped in seven. Gryniewicz was especially effective with a .500 hitting percentage for the match. Junior middle hitter Ella Butler made the Huskies a bit more tougher to defend with six kills (.444 hitting percentage).

Hamilton had a battle on its hand right from the start. Sunnyslope led a close first set most of the first half of it. The Huskies gained the lead for good in the set at 14-13 and didn't lose it. Four of Hamilton's final five points were kills by Gryniewicz and Campbell (two each.)

The second set was well on its way to a blow out. Hamilton's play was impeccable as the lead reached 19-9. That focus part kicked in and Sunnyslope took advantage slicing the deficit to 21-20. Middleton's three kills among the final four points sealed a 2-0 lead.

Sunnyslope pressed Hamilton again in the third set with a 12-9 advantage buoyed by a 4-0 run. Vanis asked for time and resilience kicked in. The Huskies reeled off an 8-0 run and finished the match going away.

"I'm super proud of this team," LeTarte said. "They played with high energy. To beat (Hamilton) there can't be any off play. They are hard to defend. More unpredictable on who you need to defend. They have all of what it takes to win (title)."

Senior setter Diana Ethridge was adept as usual distributing. She totaled 40 assists. Junior libero Tatum Thomas had 13 digs topping the Huskies' defense. 

Stat leaders for Sunnyslope were Alexia Scott (9 kills) and Laylah Daniels (7 kills), Taylor Haan 17 assists, Michelle Jung three aces and Paisley Pool and Olivia Cavazos with seven digs each.
