Things are looking a lot different for the Gilbert Christian High School’s spiritline this season. In this interview, I sat down with fellow captain and senior, Kalysta Kuebler, to discuss how things have changed this year and how she feels about her final season as a Gilbert Christian Knight. 

Having personally known Kalysta for about four years now as a close friend and teammate, it was refreshing to sit down with her and get her perspective on how the year has gone so far. 

 

How many years have you cheered?

“All four years.” Along with myself, Kalysta Kuebler is the only four year veteran. 

 

How has COVID-19 impacted your senior cheer season so far?

“We aren’t competing this year, and we don’t have a routine. When cheering for football games, we have to distance ourselves and wear masks.” Along with the average cheering for football and basketball, Gilbert Christian Spiritline usually has a competition season that will not be happening this year due to COVID-19. 

 

What is your favorite thing about being captain?

“I get to help make decisions for the team.” 

 

What is your favorite cheer memory?

“Nationals 2019.” The cheer team traveled to California to compete in the final competition of the year and got to celebrate the end of the season at Disneyland with hundreds of cheerleaders. It is usually quite the trip enjoyed by all!

 

What character quality do you have that you think makes you a good leader?

“I’m a good listener.”

 

What are your plans for after high school?

 

“College and, hopefully, start a family,” she laughed. Kalysta is currently looking at colleges in Tennessee and Texas and hopes to study photography and some day run her own business. 

 

Do you plan on continuing your cheer career after high school?

“No,” she laughed, “that chapter of my life is done after this year.”

Gilbert Christian Spirtline is lucky to have an athlete like Kalysta. She works hard and constantly is trying to better herself and her team. Even though her senior year is not going the way she would have hoped, she keeps a good attitude and a smile on her face.
