Mesa Mountain View continued its winning ways in East Valley Region play Tuesday night with a little tougher battle from its rival to the east Red Mountain. The Toros traded streaks in a tight first set victory and was more decisive in the second and third in sweeping the visiting Mountain Lions, 25-20, 25-19, 25-13.

"We've done well, but we'[re still trying to figure things out," Mountain View coach Clark Fleming, in his third season at the helm, said. "When we're under control it looks pretty good."

Mountain View has three sweeps under its belt - all against region foes. Westwood and Skyline were the first victims. The Toros complete the first round of region play in their next two matches against  Dobson and Mesa. Mountain View is the defending region champ and reached state last year falling in a five-set battle to Hamilton.

Mountain View has relied on a varied attack and that was evident in this match. Senior hitter Ashley Reed and junior hitter Lexi Williams led with 8 and 7 kills, respectively. Three other players checked in with three kills apiece. Williams and Elle Tingey had two blocks apiece and setter Briley Decker had 18 assists. Decker, reed and Mckelle Huish collected three aces each.

"Our hitting has been pretty spread out," Fleming said. "It's not one player that has to save us or lead us every night."

Red Mountain (2-1) knocked off Skyline and Dobson in its first two matches. It had its best chance to take a set Tuesday in the first. Mountain View used a 6-0 run to take a 16-11 lead, only to see the Mountain Lions answer with a 5-0 run to even things. Mountain View took control with a 5-0 run that snapped a 17-all tie. The final two sets were pretty much all Mountain View.

"Mountain View is the returning region champions," first-year Red Mountain coach Cody Sunderhaus said. "They returned a lot of players. They're a tough out.

"We've struggled recently (four and five power-ranking win seasons 2018, 2019). Tryig to get our play to a higher level. We try to play aggressively with high energy. That can help you making big runs, but we gave up a lot of big runs tonight."

Unofficial kill leaders for Red Mountain were Elizabeth Formisano, Claire LuzHoxsie and Ivy Towers with four apiece. The teams continue region play Wednesday with Mountain View hosting Dobson and Red Mountain on the road at Mesa High.
