High School Golf National Invitational

The Pinnacle girls dethroned Xavier in Arizona Division I action after the Pioneers pulled of a 562 to 578 win over the 37-time state champions last fall at the Omni Tucson National. It was only the fourth championship loss for Xavier since 1979 and Pinnacle returns four of the top ten players in the state. The Pioneers cemented their return to the greens this fall with a win at the High School Golf National Invitational held in Pinehurst, North Carolina this past week.

Pinnacle beat Ohio 920 to 926 in three rounds to capture the national title.

Ironwood Ridge brought home the AIA D-II championship last year at the Omni and a team of Tucson girls took third place in Pinehurst.

Individually, Pioneer senior Katie Stinchcomb came in second place by two strokes behind Loralie Cowart of Georgia. Stinchcomb announced her commitment to play for Memphis in January. Cowart, the Georgia state champion, commited to Troy University.

Stinchcomb took seventh at state last year, her teammate Carolyn Fuller took sixth, Kayla Wilde took eighth and Sydney Seigel came in ninth to help lead the Pioneers to the state title last fall.

Sophomore Zoe Newell came in 22nd place. Newell took fifth at state last year in the D-II ranks and Hannah Ports came in fourth place. Raina Ports took eighth.

On the boy's side, Hamilton standout Anawin Pikulthong won the individual title with a 10-under 206, beating the field by four strokes. Utah won the boys championship by one stroke over Florida (90-3 to 904) and Hamilton took fifth with a 912. Hamilton was the D-I state champion last year and Johnny Walker was the individual state champion. Pikulthong tied for 12th place.
