Mykah Anderson didn’t realize the layup she had just made in the last 1:54 in the first quarter against Basha Friday would be a milestone in her high school basketball career.

Chandler coach Glenda Skalitzy surprised Anderson with the announcement that she had hit 1,000 points during a timeout. Anderson was shocked as her teammates and the crowd all congratulated her.

“It was a great accomplishment,'' said Anderson. "I feel like the hard work I’ve put in the last couple of seasons is starting to paying off. I finally have something to show for my hard work and dedication.'',

Anderson said she didn’t think she’d make it to this moment.

“I always see people getting their milestone, their 1,000 points, and thought ‘No, I’m not good enough, but I kept pushing and kept working.”

Going into the game, a 68-61 victory, Anderson had 996 points. The senior shooting guard has been on varsity all four years at Chandler. She scored 451 points last season as a junior.

“I am so excited for her,'' said Skalitzy. "She’s worked so hard for the past four years. I know her first two years she was a little down, she didn’t score as much, but the last two years she’s just come out."

The last person to hit this milestone was her teammate and best friend Victoria Mason, who hit 1,000 points last season.

“It’s a big accomplishment for the both of us and I feel like it’s very rare for two people who are best friends to ever hit that mark in their life in high school,” said Mason.

Anderson’s father, Michael, was at the game to witness his daughter’s accomplishment. Anderson said she looks up to her father and how he’s always pushed her to keep going.

“I always taught her to play the game the right way," said Michael.."Play 100% and leave everything on the court. Don’t worry about numbers, don’t worry about stats, if you’re playing the game the right way you’ll see at the end of the game you have the stats”

Anderson led the team in scoring with 23 points.

Anderson will be attending Idaho State University next year to continue her education and basketball career.
