Girls, boys hoops: Winslow 'Dogs knock off Tuba City

GIRLS

WINSLOW 61, TUBA CITY 49

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs knocked off the Tuba City Lady Warriors, 61-49, in a freedom girl's basketball game at Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winslow on Thursday night.

Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan said he was proud of the Lady Bulldogs on both ends of the hardwood.

"My team played great defense and moved the ball well on offense," Jordan said.

Winslow took a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Tuba Citym 17-16, in the second quarter for a 29-23 halftime advantage.

Winslow canned 21 points to Tuba City's eight points in the third stanza for a 50-31 lead when the third period expired. Tuba City battled back in the fourth quarter, canning 18 points. Winslow netted 11 points during the fourth frame.

Four Winslow players scored in double digits. Andrea Willeto led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points. Kylie Begay and Kristin Wagner both tallied 13 points. Briana Little added 10 points.

Jayda Chee topped Tuba City with 16 points.

Winslow, 9-7 overall, entertains Show Low on January 14 for a 3A East Region contest.

Tuba City, 11-4, travels to Window Rock tp face the Lady Scouts on January 11 for a 3A North Region game.

BOYS

WINSLOW 80, TUBA CITY 49

Winslow played uptempo basketball, en route to an 80-49 victory over the Tuba City in a boy's freedom game at Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winsow on Thursday night.

Winslow pushed the ball down the floor, knocking down key baskets during the contest. The Bulldogs canned 13 treys, including six  three-pointers from Tyrell Young.

Winslow took an early first quarter lead, netting 23 points to Tuba City's 13 points. The Bulldogs poured in 19 points and the Warriors hit for 15 points in the second period. Winslow held a 42-28 halftime advantage.

Winslow outscored Tuba City, 19-14, in the third period, taking a 61-42 lead as the third quarter expired. The Bulldogs netted 19 points to the Warriors' seven points in the fourth quarter.

Winslow's Tyrell Young led all scorers with 24 points. Dustin Richard canned 17 points, Zach Wagner tallied 15 points and Zane Corum chipped in with nine points for the Bulldogs.

Britton Hardy and Desean Butler both scored 11 points for Tuba City.

Winslow head coach Scott Corum said he was proud of the Bulldogs' effort.

"We did a good job of playing inside out," Corum said. "Our post players did a good job of getting the ball inside and kicking it out to our shooters. I thought we did a good job with the skip pass against their zone. We were able to get some open perimeter shots with the skip pass."

Corum continued, "It was nice to get back to playing Bulldog Basketball and scoring in the 80's, after only scoring 41 points last week against American Leadership."

Winslow improved to 14-5 overall. The Bulldogs hosts Show Low on January 14 in a 3A East Region contest at 7:30 p.m.

Tuba City is 7-7 overall. The Warriors travel to face the Window Rock Scoiuts on January 11 for a 3A North Region game at the Events Center in Fort Defiance at 7:30 p.m.
