Girls, boys hoops: Chinle rebounds from Tuesday night's loss; beats Many Farms

CHINLE 73, MANY FARMS 33

The Chinle Lady Wildcats rebounded from Tuesday night's tough loss on the road at Page, to post a 73-33 victory over the Many Farms Lobos in a non-region freedom girl's basketball game at Many Farms High School on Wednesday night.

Chinle head coach Fran McCurtain was pleased with the Lady Wildcats win.

"We regrouped from last night's loss," McCurtain said. "The girls worked hard on defense and worked on communication. The girls did a great job of listening tonight and worked with effort. The starters didn't play the fourth quarter."

Chinle raced out to a commanding 17-9 first quarter advantage. The Lady Wildcats extended its lead to 20 points, 27-17, at halftime, after outscoring the Lady Lobos, 20-8,, in the second quarter.

Chinle continued to shoot well, knocking down 24 points in the third quarter. Defensively, the Lady Wildcats contained Many Farms to 13 points. Chinle led, 61-30. Chinle tallied 12 points and Many Farms manage three points in the fourth quarter.

Aisha Ashley knocked down 18 points to lead Chinle. Brandii Clah added 14 points, followed by Lashante Benally with 10 points for the Lady Wildcats.

Thalia Johnson netted 10 points for Many Farms.

Chinle improved to 7-5 overall. Chinle will be on the road in Kayenta on January 10 at 6 p.m. to face Monument Valley Lady Mustangs in a Class 3A North Region game.

Many Farms will play at St. Johns on January 11.

BOYS

CHINLE 86, MANY FARMS 28

Five Chinle players scored in double digits to help lead the Wildcats to an 86-28 victory over the Many Farms Lobos in a non-region freedom boy's basketball game in Many Farms on Wednesday night.

"We had great balance in scoring, with five individuals in double figures," said Chinle head coach Raul Mendoza.

Chinle took a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats continued to shoot well in the second period, canning 25 points. The Lobos netted eight points. Chinle took a 47-19 halftime advantage.

Chinle knocked down 27 third quarter points, while Many Farms managed eight points for a 74-27 lead. Chinle canned 12 points and Many Farms scored one point in the fourth quarter.

Colin Yazzie tallied 18 points to pace Chinle. Kylen Yazzie and Latherian John both netted 11 points apiece for Chinle. Brayden Ahasteen and Antwone Carroll both added 10 points apiece for the Wildcats.

Corbin Begay scored eight points for Many Farms.

Chinle, 12-7 overall, will be in Kayenta to take on the Monument Valley Mustangs on a 3A North Region game at 7:30 p.m.

Many Farms will be at St. Johns on January 11.
