Boys hoops: Chinle Wildcats knocks off Tuba City Warriors in 3A North Region

In an uptempo ball game, the Chinle Wildcats knocked off the Tuba City Warriors, 90-59, in a 3A North Region boy's basketball game on Tuesday night.
The game was knotte 22-22 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats stepped up offensively in the second quarter, erupting for 29 points. Tuba City poured in 15 points. Chinle took a 51-37 lead at the end of the first half.
Chinle rattled the cages for 22 points in the third quarter. The Warriors netted 12 points. The Warriors led 73-49 when the third period expired. Chinle outscored Tuba City, 17-10, during the fourth quarter.
"We picked up defensively in the second quarter," said Chinle head coach Raul Mendoza. "That allowed us to pull away from Tuba City. Tuba City started the game by hitting five three-pointers in the first quarter."
Mendoza praised the play of Kylen Yazzie and Darren Woody.
"Kylen Yazzie and Darren Woody did a great job in the second and third quarter respectively," Mendoza said.
Chinle senior Cooper Burbank poured in 19 points. Kylen Yazzie added 13 points and Malik Bahe chipped in with 12 points for the Wildcats.
Popsiya Lomayestewa led Tuba City with 14 points. Tyler Williams contributed 11 points for the Warriors.
Chinle, 6-3 overall, travels to Winslow, 9-4 overall, for a freedom game today at 7:30 p.m.
