Coyote Classic Boys & Girls Soccer Invite

The Coyote Classic Soccer Invite was able to avoid weather issues on Day 1 this past Saturday since its games were mostly slated before rains sans lightning came down late afternoon. That was not the case on Day 2 on Monday at both Campo Verde and Higley high schools.
Rain was supposed to have vacated the East Valley by the start of games around noon. And for at least the first games of the day that held true. But Mother Nature intervened a little before 3 p.m just as the first half of the boys match at Campo Verde between Mesa and Corona del Sol concluded.
Those teams did not get to finish as a string of lightning delays led to Mesa and Corona agreeing to call their match with Mesa taking a 1-0, one-half triumph. Campo Verde and Central were supposed to play at 3:30, but they got pushed back about 90 minutes before finally getting their game in. The day's schedule picked up from there with the scheduled games as the lightining abated and weather cleared.
Mesa's victory came as a result of a goal in the 27th minute by sophomore Abdiel Beltran, who joined a couple teammates penetrating Corona's box with Beltran going top shelf from about five yards out. Corona keeper Jack Ireland made a couple of nice saves one before and one after the game's only goal. Mesa is 2-0 in its bracket while Corona dropped to 0-2. Overall Mesa is 3-0 and Corona del Sol 2-2 for the young season.
