Pinnacle's girls basketball team was down a starter Thursday night when it traveled to Dobson, but two mainstays from last year supplied the offense needed in topping the host Mustangs, 47-38, in a 6A non-region game.

Junior guard Ally Stedman poured in 13 of her 21 points in the second half and sophomore center Kennedy Basham added 12 points to boost the Pioneers, semifinalist at state last season. Pinnacle played in last week's  Miner Webster Invitational at Highland and with Thursday's wins and another on Tuesday is 5-2 in th new campaign.

"We're still kind of finding out who we are," Pinnacle coach Rick Bunger said. "We have some people back from last year, but some new ones. We had six turnovers in the first quarter so it wasn't a good start. We got better on offense as the game went along. I liked our defense. We took their 3-point game away for the most part."

Playing tight defense against Dobson's perimeter game, combined with the 6-foot-6, Basham in the middle made it a tough night for the Mustangs' offense.

Pinnacle led 12-9 after the first quarter as both teams committed six turnovers. Pinnacle had just seven the rest of the game. The Pioneers used a a 12-5 edge in the second quarter to take a double-digit lead to intermission.

Dobson cut the deficit to 26-21  2 1/2 minutes into the third period, but by quarter's end was back u by 12. The lead reached 18 in the final period with Dobson making a late run to half that lead at the final buzzer.

"They kept us in check from outside," Dobson coach Henry Bribiescas said. "Their length bothered us as well and I thought it would. We knew Basham was going to get her points and Stedman, she is the catalyst for them."

Dobson (3-2) has played well in the early going with its top player in 2017 - junior Jaden Leslie - back from a knee injury that sidelined her all of last season. Leslie netted 11 points in this one.

The high point for Bribiescas and the Mustangs was the play of freshman Aaliyah Garcia. Garcia, who is starting, did not score in the first half. She got untracked in the second half tallying 15 points with a pair of threes and making seven of eight free throws.
