Holbrook canned a barrage of three-pointers as the Roadrunners raced out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Holbrook chalked up an impressive 71-56 victory over the Window Rock Scouts in boy's basketball action in a freedom game played at Window Rock's Events Center in Fort Defiance on Tuesday night.

Led by senior guard Kobi Koerperich's three-point shooting, Holbrook outshot and outplayed Window Rock during the opening quarter.

Koerperich went to work instantly in the first quarter. With Koerperich knocking down treys from behind the three-point arc, the Roadrunners held a 10-point advantage, 23-13, when the first quarter expired.

Holbrook head coach Delmar Johnson said Koerperich set the tone for the Roadrunners.

"Kobi (Koerperich) played an outstanding game," Johnson said about his prize shooter. "The key to our victory was we hit three-point baskets. We got out early and we held our composure. The guys pushed the ball up and down the floor. Our three-point shooting was outstanding. I know Window Rock can comeback with their shooting and defense. Kobi and his teammated did an outstanding job."

Holbrook continued its torrid shooting in the second quarter, behind Koerperich, Eric Baldonado and Anthony Nelson. The Roadrunners and Scouts traded baskets during the second quarter. Holbrook outscored Window Rock, 22-18, as the Roadrunners held a 45-31 halftime lead.

The runnin' Roadrunners pushed the ball up the floor, knocking down field goals and three-point baskets. Window Rock had a diffcult time finding the basket. Holbrook outscored Window Rock, 22-7, as the Roadrunners increased its lead, 63-38.

In the final stanza, Window Rock shot better. Window Rock senior Adrian Destea stepped into the limelight, Destea helped the Scouts with his uncanny shooting. Window Rock tallied 18 points, while Holbrook managed eight points.

Window Rock head coach Tom Bizardi said he was aware of Holbrook's three-point shooting.

"I've seen Holbrook the past four years during the summer," Bizardi said. "The kids knew Holbrook a good shooting team, especially from beyond the three-point arc. Holbrook is a veteran team with experience. They executed well offensively. They had a hot hand to begin the game and they put them up."

Bizardi added, "It's a building process for us. We will learn from this loss to Holbrook. We will see Holbrook again this month. We have to be better prepared. We know they will shoot from beyond the three-point arc. We hope to have a better game and better results next time we face them."

Holbrook's Koerperich led all scorers, knocking down 28 points, including five treys. Baldonado and Nelson both tallied 17 points for the Roadrunners.

Window Rock senior Destea poured in 23 points in a losing effort.

GIRLS

WINDOW ROCK 55, HOLBROOK 53

Window Rock pulled off a hard-fought 55-53 victory over Holbrook in the girl's contest.

Holbrook started off well, taking a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Window Rock shot the ball effectively in the second quarter. The Scouts canned 21 points in the second quarter. Holbrook could muster eight point. When the second quarter expired, Window Rock took a 29-20 halftime lead.

"We played better defense in the second quarter," Window Rock head coach Sharon Toadecheenie said. "They built a lead on us in the first quarter. Our defense stepped up. Playing defense is what we work on. Defense is what helped us take the lead. We scored the points offensively, but it was our defense, which allowed us to take the lead."

Holbrook and Window Rock played evenly in the second quarter. The Roadrunners outscored the Lady Scouts 14-13. Window Rock took a 42-34 lead when the third quarter ended.

Window Rock led by six points, 48-42, with 4:57 remaining in the fourth quarter. Holbrook tallied six unanswered points, tying the game 48-48, when sophomore guard scored a basket on a steal.

Window Rock regained the lead on a three-pointer by Alexis Tsosie-Hood, 51-48. Holbrook's Madison Chappell tied the contest, 51-51, when she canned a basket and hit one free throw with 1:45 remaining in the game.

With 42-seconds left, Holbrook's Matehya Aberle scored a basket inside the paint., tying the game, 53-53. Aberle injured her calf and she left the game.

The game remained knotted at 53-53 until 6.9-seconds left. Window Rock's Jana Solee connected with a pair of charity tosses for the win.

Window Rock's Solee led all scorers with 18 points. Lady Scouts Robbie Talkalai added 15 points.

Window Rock will be on the road on Thursday at Valley Sanders.

Jincane Cummings netted 17 points and Aberle added 16 points for Holbrook.

"The girls played a good game," said Holbrook head coach Greg Perkins. "We lost Matehya Aberle to a calf injury and that hurt us. Madison Chappell didn't have one of her best games. She made her presence known. Matehya and Madison are two of the state's top players. We need to get games under our belts."

Holbrook visits Chinle Lady Wildcats on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Wildcat Den.
