THE MATCHUP: This will be the first time the teams have played in their history. Red Mountain has been open for three decades and Liberty has existed for a bit less than half that time opening in 2006. Red Mountain has won 10 games in a row and of its 12 wins only one game has been decided by a score or less. Its loss was in four overtimes to Perry by a point. Liberty has four losses, three by a TD or less. The teams have two common opponents -- Desert Ridge and Mountain View. Both defeated Mountain View handily and Red Mountain has knocked off Desert Ridge twice. The teams are similar with a run-first mentality and the ability to throw to keep opponents off balance. Both quarterbacks are adept as runners and passers, which causes defenses additional worry. Liberty is very much an up-tempo offense and relies on its physical offensive line led by Temoc Sandoval and Frank Thompson. Liberty sports plenty of depth at running back. That was augmented in early October with freshman RB Zaccheus Cooper checking in. Cooper is averaging 96 yards rushing a game and 125 in the postseason. Red Mountain will be without 1,000-yard rusher Deonce Elliott for the second game in a row. That led to second-leading rusher Ty McElroy getting a heavier load and he responded with a season-high 178 yards while doubling his previous attempts for a game. Red Mounain's line is anchored by senior and ASU-bound Ben Bray and Jake Griffin. Red Mountain did not play the schedule Liberty did week in and week out as strength of schedules were drastically different. Liberty faced eight teams that qualified for postseason; Red Mountain played five. In a winner-take-all game that may not matter. Both teams were tested in their semifinal victories.
