Chinle senior Rolonda Jumbo attempts to become only the second runner in state cross country history to win four individual titles on Saturday at the 2011 Cross Country Championship at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix.

Jumbo won the 2008 (3A), 2009 (3A) and 2010 (D-III) titles by wide margins. Her times were at worst second or third best regardless of division. Those times trailed only the 5A-I champions those years, Jessica Tonn and Sarah Fakler of Xavier. The only other runner to win four individual titles was Monument Valley's Danielle Bornfield, who prevailed from 1989-1992. Bornfield and Monument Valley won titles each year as well. Chinle has won titles in two of Jumbo's three years, narrowly losing to Page last year by four points. Jumbo and the rest of the Division III girls field are scheduled to run at 11:40 a,m.

Fakler (D-I) and Cibola's Bernie Montoya (D-I) are the other returning state champs. Neither competed in their respective sectionals last week, but their teams qualified allowing them to compete Saturday. Fakler and Montoya each won decisively at the prestigious Desert Twilight Festival on Sept. 30.

Among the runners trying to unseat Fakler are Cibola's Monica Huston, Highland's Tory Haberman and Xavier teammate Breanna Perrone. Among those chasing Montoya are Highland's David Graham, Mesa Mountain View's Dallin Gherkins, Rincon's Noah Kenyawani and Ryan Silva and Desert Vista's Carter Macey.

New champs will be crowned in D-II, D-III and D-IV boys and D-II and D-IV girls. Among the boys top contenders are McClintock's Eduardo Roa (D-II) and Maricopa's Chris Lessard (D-II); Chinle's Johnathan Yazzie (D-III); St. Augustine's Nico Montanez (IV) and Hopi's Domonic Sinquah (D-IV). Top girls contenders are Sahuaro's Chloe Newell (D-II) and Flagstaff's Tatiana Gillick (D-II). Peoria's Rebecca Farnsley (D-II) Rio Rico's Marley Henson (D-III). Pusch Ridge's Sara MacDonald (D-IV), Tempe Prep's Emily Hedberg (D-IV) and Sedona Red Rock's Mykala Seresun (D-IV) were the D-IV sectional winners last week.
