This past Friday Gilbert Christian (5-3) defeated Coronado High School (0-7) 48-42 in a shootout. Gilbert Christian was coming out of their bye week and was looking to get back in the win column after their 35-23 home loss to Bourgade Catholic (5-3). The Knights did just that as their offense exploded for 48 points and 400 yards. The Coronado Dons meanwhile scored a season-high 42 points but was unable to stop Gilbert Christian's offense led by senior fullback/wingback Cole Sundt’s (2) 7 rushing touchdowns.
No. 2, Cole Sundt eludes Don defender for the 6.
Gilbert Christian entered the game without impactful juniors Brody Curtner (7) and Marcus McWilliams (16). This forced the Knights to play fullback Cole Sundt at wingback and he did not disappoint. Sundt set the school record for individual rushing touchdowns in a single game with 7. Gilbert Christian jumped out to an early 22-6 lead before allowing the Dons to have a chance to tie the game but GCHS stopped the two-point conversion attempt. The Knights would score again before the half and lead 28-20 at the break. The third quarter was almost all Knights as they extended their lead to 40-20. Coronado scored late in the third and used that momentum to score 22 unanswered and take a 42-40 lead late in the 4th quarter. In need of season-saving touchdown drive Gilbert Christian would convert on a crucial 4th and 1, as well as a key 13 yard, pick up on 3rd and 12, before Cole Sundt would score on a long touchdown run giving the Knights a 48-42 lead with 1:13 to go. On the Don's final possession Knight's senior defensive end Tate Whitlow (55) sacked the Coronado quarterback, forcing and recovering the game-sealing fumble.
Now sitting at 5-3 Gilbert Christian enters the final two games of the regular-season slate against region opponents Fountain Hills (3-5) and Arizona College Prep (7-1). Coronado will hope to win for the first time in 2019 as they play Odyssey Institute (6-2) and ALA-Gilbert North (4-4). The Knights will play Fountain Hills on Friday, October 25th at Gilbert Christian High school. The game will be the Knights senior night as they look to avenge last seasons 47-7 loss to the Falcons.
