A cross country relay meet has been run in a few U.S. states and Canada so Chandler High decided to take a stab at it on Friday afternoon at Crossroads Park in Gilbert.

The concept met with approval with 16 schools participating. The relay length is four, 3,200-meter legs. One of the teams competing is an elite squad - Highland - and the Hawks showed nothing more than their usual prowess.

Highland's Team A - the Hawks entered more than one team as did severak schools - prevailed. The all-senior quartet of Sam Green, Ernest Green, Caden Resendez and Leo Daschbach managed to finish in just under the 40-minute mark -- 39 minutes, 59.5 seconds. Daschbach, who committed to the University of Washington earlier this week, completed his leg in a speedy 9:09.6.

The winning girls team also was from Highland - its Team A. Caroline McLeskey, Jariel Sebastian, Kathryn Sewell and Emma Finchum clocked in at 48:43.6 besting runner-up Chandler by about three minutes. McLeskey had the best split covering her 3,200 in 10:51.3

No team scores are kept as it's intended to be a fun meet as schools begin the ramp up to city, regional and state competition over the next month. This was the third meet hosted by Chandler High this year. The school has hosted two meets regularly - the Chandler Invitational and Ojo Rojo - each with a different format.
