Football: Herman Fredenberg, Larry Arnold remembered as Window Rock Scouts best

Herman Fredenberg and Larry 'Bruiser' Arnold were tough as nails on the gridiron.

Fredenberg and Arnold were Window Rock Scouts football teams pride and joy. They were the best.

Fredenberg attended Window Rock Unified School District K-12. Fredenberg was a 1968 graduate of Window Rock High School. Fredenberg, known as 'Bird', was a member of the Menominee tribe.

Fredenberg was known for his athletic ability and skills, participating in football, basketball, wrestling and baseball for the Scouts.

It was football which opened the doors for Fredenberg.

On the football field, Fredenberg was known for his vicious hits as a linebacker and punishing ground gains as a fullback.

The 1968 Scouts football team played a challenging schedule against Arizona and New Mexico high schools. Led by Fredenberg, the Scouts were one of the best football teams.

At the conclusion of the 1968 season, Fredenberg was honored, receiving Window Rock's Judd Avey Memorial Award.

Fredenberg earned post season honors. Fredenberg was a three time All-Conference and All-State selection as a linebacker and fullback. At conclusion of his senior year, Fredenberg was voted to participate for the North All-Stars during the Arizona Coaches Association's North-South All-Star Football Game.

For his outstanding effort, Fredenberg earned a football scholarship to University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in the fall of 1968.

During his first year at New Mexico, Fredenberg was the starting linebacker on the Lobos freshmen team. Due to NCAA rules, freshmen were not allowed to play varsity.

Fredenberg was a three-year starting linebacker for New Mexico, during his sophomore, junior and senior years. At conclusion of his junior and senior years, Fredenberg earned First Team all-Western Athletic Conference linebacker.

During his senior year, Sports Illustrated honored Fredenberg as National Player of the Week for his outstanding performance, when he intercepted four passes and had 20 tackles from his linebacker position.

After Fredenberg completed his outstanding college football career, he attended medical school at University of Kentucky, where he became a Dentist.

The Herman Fredenberg Memorial Most Valuable Player award plaque is presented to the Scouts' top player at the end of the season.

Arnold was a 1967 graduate of Window Rock High School. Arnold was known as 'Bruiser' throughout the school district.

In addition to playing his favorite sport of football, Arnold participated in basketball and baseball.

Many of the Scouts' opponents ran its offensive plays in the opposite direction of Arnold. Arnold made his way around the opponents' offensive plays to make tackles.

Arnold was a two-time recipient of the Judd Avey Memorial Award.

Arnold earned All-Conference and All-State honors during his junior and senior years, as an offensive and defensive lineman. Arnold was selected to participate in the Arizona Coaches Association North-South All-Star Football Game.

Arnold was recruited to play football at Arizona Western College, from 1967-69. Arnold played linebacker.

Arnold played alongside Charlie Weaver at AWC. Weaver went on to play major college football at University of Southern California. Weaver was an All-American and all-PAC 8 defensive end. Weaver was selected in the NFL Draft. Weaver played 11 seasons in the NFL, inluding 10 with the Detroit Lions and one with the Washington Redskins.

Two notable players Arnold was teammates with at AWC were Alonzo 'Skip' Thomas and Willie Hall. Thomas and Hall joined Weaver as teammates at University of Southern California. Thomas played in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders. Hall played in the NFL with the New Orlean Saints and Oakland Raiders.

During his career at AWC, Arnold played in two National Junior College Athletic Association football bowl games.

The Larry Arnold Memorial Defensive Player of the Year award plaque is presented to the Scouts' top defensive player at the end of the season.
