Baseball: Chinle 'Cats sweep Window Rock Fighting Scouts in region twinbill

Chinle got a strong pitching performance, played solid defense and made contact at the plate, as the Wildcats swept a 3A North Region twinbill from the Window Rock Fighting Scouts in baseball action in Chinle on Saturday.

Chinle edged Window Rock, 6-5, in the first game. The Wildcats completed the doubleheader sweep, nipping the Fighting Scours, 4-3, in the nightcap.

Chinle head coach Don Kimbrough said his players knew it would be two tough games.

"It was two good wins," Kimbrough said. "The guys worked hard in both games. Our pitchers threw well. Our defense backed up our pitchers. We hit the ball well. The guys played well together as a unit. The guys were consistent."

In the opener, Window Rock jumped on Wildcat stsrting hurler, Jayden Guy for three runs in the first inning. The Fighting Scouts added a pair of runs in the second inning. Guy settled down to hold Window Rock scoreless for the next five innings.

Guy went the distance on the mound, allowing eight hits, five runs and struckout five Window Rock batters.

Chinle crossed the plate twice in the first, second and third innings. The Wildcats had 10 hits in the first game.

Pacing the offensive attack for Chinle were Joshua Tullie and Jayden Guy, with two hits apiece. Jermaine Jones, Myren Hoskie, Nelson Lynch, Jaren Segay, Jake Guy and Bryneal Hoskie all had one hit apiece for the Wildcats. Myren Hoskie tagged a triple.

In the second game, brothers Myren Hoskie and Bryneal Hoskie combined for a four-hitter on the pitching mound.

Winning pitcher Myren Hoskie threw 3  2/3 innings in relief. He did not allow any hits, one run, one walk and striking out seven batters. Starting pither Bryneal Hoskie worked 3  1/3 innings. He gave up four hits, two runs, one base-on-balls and fanning four batters.

"We out hit Window Rock, 7 to 4," Kimbrough said. "Our defense stepped up and made good plays. Myren and Bryneal Hoskie both threw a solid game. Our defense played outstanding."

Chinle led 1-0 at the end of the first inning. Window Rock crossed the plate twice in the third inning, taking a 2-1 lead.

Window Rock held a 2-1 lead, heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Chinle's Nelson Lynch was man of the hour, as he cracked a three-run home run over the rightfield fence off Window Rock relief pitcher Rainer Morgan's first pitch, lifting Chinle to a 4-2 lead. The Fighting Scouts tallied one run in the top half of the seventh inning.

Jayden Guy, Nelson Lynch and Duante Gorman all had two hits apiece to lead Chinle. Joshua Tullie added one hit for the Wildcats.

"I am proud of the guys," Kimbrough said. "They worked hard. They worked together as a unit."

Chinle improved its overall record to 9-2 and the Wildcats are 3-1 in 3A North Region play. Chinle entertains the Alchesay Falcons on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in a single game.

Window Rock is 5-8 overall and 2-2 in 3A North Region. The Fighting Scouts travel to Show Low to face the Cougars on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-region ball game.
