Horizon Honors falls to Chandler Prep, 9-0
March 15, 2019 by Lynsey Amundson, Arizona State University
The Horizon Honors Eagles lost their non-conference matchup against the Chandler Prep Titans, 9-0, Friday evening despite receiving a strong pitching performance from freshman Lillian Wilson.
“I threw my off-speed pitches very well, both my changeup and drop ball were working good tonight,” Wilson said.
With 12 strikeouts, Wilson dominated the Titan offense leaving them with only six hits. Most of the nine runs scored were linked to on defensive errors by the Eagles as the Titans built a 4-0 lead after two innings.
“I thought she did fantastic," head coach Rick Ewert said. "She has done a great job mixing up her pitches, changing speeds, and her ability to hit her spots has really helped her.”
Errors and the fact that Titans freshman pitcher Isabella Guadian threw a shutout with 11 strikeouts, led them to a win. She allowed just two hits in seven innings.
“She’s fantastic,” Titans head coach Frank Peake said. “ She’s a freshman pitcher coming in from club ball and she just dominates.”
The Eagles' two hits came from a double by catcher Brianna Reinhart in the second inning and a single by shortstop Piper Corey in the sixth inning.
“We need to have better at-bats and cut down on the strikeouts,” Ewert said. “But I even saw improvements today from the first at bats to the third, so as long as we keep improving that’s all I can ask for.”
Guadian not only threw a complete game, but she also did damage at the plate going 3-for-3 with one RBI. The Titans scored four of their nine runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, partly due to a two-run double by senior Lexi Frey.
Chandler Prep (6-3) will face Phoenix Christian at home on Monday at 4 p.m.
Horizon Honors (2-5) will get a week off before they face The Odyssey Institute in Buckeye on March 26 at 3:45 p.m.
“I need them to change their mentality," Ewert said. "I want them to get in the box with a little more aggression, looking to hit something hard, and that’s not what I saw tonight.”
