SCA softball wins at home after rocky start to season

Scottsdale Christian Acadamy won 12-2 on Thursday, ending the game after five innings with good offensive plays and smart pitching by junior captain Tiegan Hoffman against Phoenix Country Day.
Hoffman, who also pitched Monday’s game at PCDHS, said she was happy with her overall performance and feltstrong despite pitching two games in a row. She also said her team’s effort has really shown the past two games.
“I think the team’s really improving,” she said. “We’re doing much better than we were even in the first game (against PCDHS).”
Hoffman pitched all five innings and had at least one strikeout in every inning except for the first.
In the bottom of the first, the Eagles got through their entire batting lineup. They scored three runs in the first and second innings and four in the third.
Hoffman, who is also one of SCA’s strongest batters, came just short of a home run twice in the game, both times the ball bouncing over the fence, placing her at second base.
Catcher and senior captain Lily Snyder also had a great offensive game. Before Hoffman’s second double of the game Snyder also got a double with the bases loaded.
Her on-base percentage of the game was .750, and by the end of the third the score was 10-1.
Phoenix Country Day ended the game with some pressure, having players on second and third with two outs but only added one run in the fifth inning.
Snyder was expecting PCDHS to be a tougher challenge, knowing that they had seen Hoffman pitch before and seen how they play their game.
“We thought it would be a closer game,” she said. “We were scared that we were going to do worse, but we did pretty good.”
Coach Steven Hoffman was also anxious to see how his team would perform after facing PCDHS only three days ago.
“I told my team that it’s always harder to win the second time,” he said. “They’ve seen us they know us, and we couldn’t have any let downs. They came through, and they played hard.”
The Eagles began the season with two losses. While that doesn’t seem like a promising start, Steven Hoffman believes that his relatively young team has gotten better with each game.
“I don’t say a whole lot after the games. I take notes and the next practice we talk and work on things,” he said. “My notes are getting a lot smaller, that’s a sign of good improvement.”
Steven Hoffman said that if his team stays healthy, he expects them to compete. And while their overall record is split 2-2, they remain undefeated when playing within their conference.
SCA’s next game is March 18 at home against Valley Christian High School.
