It's baseball season on the Navajo Nation.

Without a doubt, when baseball season commences on the Navajo Nation, the inclement weather arrives.

The Snowflake Lobos and Window Rock Fighting Scouts battled for five innings on the baseball diamond, under windy, cold and snowy conditions.

Snowflake rallied in the top half of the fifth inning, crossing the plate seven times to post a 9-8 victory in a freedom game in Fort Defiance.

Snowflake improved its season record to 7-1. Window Rock dropped to 1-6.

Snowflake head coach Bryan Lang said he is proud of his team's comeback.

"The guys did a good job," Lang said. "We were down heading into the fifth inning, when we rallied. We made contact and put the baseball into play. In the second inning, Traegon (Sanderfer) hit a towering home run. When we were down, the guys played solid baseball to pick up a victory. The weather wasn't the best, but we pulled off a good win."

Snowflake led 2-0, before Window Rock stormed back in the bottom half of the fourth inning with eight runs.

Window Rock head coach Murray Shirley said the Fighting Souts have improved since losing to Snowflake during the American Leadership Academy-Gilbert North baseball tournament earlier this season.

"The weather conditions bothered both teams," Shirley said. "We had a rough start. We came around as the game progressed. We had a good fourth inning. We rallied and the guys produced runs. We took the lead. Snowflake came back and rallied. We have to protect our lead."

Window Rock and Snowflake made contact at the plate, but both failed to produce any runs in the first inning.

Snowflake ended the scoring drought in the top half of the second inning, on a solo home run by Traegon Standerfer. Ricky Munger crossed the plate for the Lobos second run of the game in the third inning.

Window Rock stepped up offensively in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

Demetrius Begay began the rally with a base hit. Miguel Fulton followed with a safety. JayRoger Lizer reached first base on a base hit. Begay, Fulton and Lizer all crossed the plate.

The Fighting Scouts continued its rally. Rainer Morgan, Aaron Morgan and Dante Shirley all got base hits and later scored. Harry Bowman and LaShawn Platero recorded base hits and scored Window Rock's final two runs of the inning.

Snowflake turned in a rally of its own in the top half of the fifth inning.

Lobos' Ricky Munger recorded a base hit. Chase Williams and Standerfer both had base hits. Munger, Williams and Standerfer all crossed home plate, cutting Window Rock's lead to 8-5.

Snowflake's rally continued. Josh Beecroft, Cody Fox and Tyler Hall each recorded a base hit. Beecroft, Fox and Hall scored a run. Brydon Hatch had a safety and later scored. When the third out was in the books, Snowflake tallied seven runs. The Lobos recorded three outs without any runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to win the game.

Window Rock entertains Newcomb, New Mexico Skyhawks on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Fighting Scouts will be on the road at Winslow on Wednesday to face the Bulldogs at 4 p.m.

Snowflake is idle next week, due to Spring Break. Snowflake entertains Chinle Wildcats on March 19 at 3:30 p.m.
