Chinle made contact at the plate, putting the baseball in play and swatting 28 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Holbrook on a cold and gloomy day in Chinle on Saturday.

Chinle won the first game, 7-2. The Wildcats completed the sweep with a 17-5 five inning win in the nightcap in a pair of freedom baseball games.

Chinle head coach Don Kimbrough said he was happy with the Wildcats' team performance in both games.

"It was two impressive victories," Kimbrough said. "The guys were impressive. The guys hit the ball well. We got good pitching. Defensively, we committed a couple of errors, which Holbrook took advantage of and scored their two runs. The guys were nervous, but overcame their nervousness."

Chinle recorded 11 hits in the first game. Myren Hoskie, Jeron Segay and Jayden Guy all two safeties apiece for the Wildcats.

Hoskie had a pair of singles, Segay had a three-bagger and a single and Guy recorded a pair of singles for the Wildcats.

With one hit apiece for the Wildcats were Jake Guy, Bryneal Hoskie, Nelson Lynch, Joshua Tullie and Branton Sandoval. Lynch and Tullie both had a double.

Chinle starting pitcher Bryneal Hoskie threw five innings, striking out three batters and was the winning hurler. Myren Hoskie was summoned from the bull pen, throwing two innings of relief. He fanned five batters.

Kimbrough said the Wildcats continued to put the baseball into play during the second game.

"The guys hit the ball well," Kimbrough said. "In both games, we had good run distribution. We have a young team. The guys were ready to play.."

Holbrook took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning. Chinle battled back in the second inning, crossing the plate six times. The Roadrunners added a pair of runs in the third inning, cutting the Wildcats' lead to two runs, 6-4.

The Wildcats erupted for five runs in the bottom half of the third inning, for an 11-4 lead. The Roadrunners tallied one run in the top half of the fourth inning. The Wildcats put the game in the books with six runs in the fourth inning.

Myren Hoskie, Bryneal Hoskie and Jake Guy all had three hits and Jeron Segay added a pair of hits for Chinle. Myren Hoskie had a pair of singles and a double, while Bryneal Hoskie recorded two doubles and a single. Jake Guy ripped a triple and had two one-baggers. Segay had a double and a single.

Jayden Guy was the winning pitcher. He pitched three innings, allowing one hit. Myren Hoskie threw two innings of relief, giving up three hits.

"The guys hit the ball well and we scored runs," Kimbrough said. "It's our first two games of the season. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Today's doubleheader win is good. We're looking for improvement. We need to get some games under our belts."

Chinle, 2-0, will next see action this Thursday against the Pinon Eagles at 10:15 a.m. in the Joseph City Baseball Tournament, March 7-9.

"The guys will play one game at a time," Kimbrough said.
