Salpointe, Canyon del Oro come together in Division II tilt
September 28, 2011 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365
Salpointe Catholic has moved down. Canyon del Oro has moved up. They are on the same footing, in terms of competing in Divison II this year rather than 5A-I and 4A-I, respectively, in recent years.
The pair find out who the better team is Friday (Sept. 30) in the sixth full week of prep football action in southern Arizona and the East Valley.
Salpointe is riding a four-game winning streak in which the Lancers have devoured each opponent. They opened the season with a 22-21 loss to Chaparral. Canyon del Oro also opened the season with stiff competition, losing its first two games on the heels of finishing runner-up at state in 4A-I last year to Saguaro. CDO has won three in a row. It's losses have come against unbeaten Ironwood Ridge and Marana Mountain View.
Salpointe is led offensively by running back Johnny Pena and transfer quarterback Andy Cota. Pena rushed for 100 yards for the third straight game last week and scored five touchdowns. Andy Cota has thrown for 953 yards, 13 touchdowns. He has not thrown an interception.
Canyon del Oro struggled on offense the first two games scoring a total of 14 points. The last three games the Dorados are averaging 40 per game. The teams have a common opponent is Marana Mountain View with Salpointe having the better showing (a decisive win) and CDO losing by a touchdown.
Senior linebacker-running back Blake Martinez, the top returnee for CDO, has been a workhorse on both sides of the ball, combining for 400 yards of offense and scoring nine TDs
Here's a glance at other top games this week in southern Arizona and the East Valley:
Hamilton (5-0) at Chandler (4-1) -- Hamilton owns this series as in never losing to Chandler since the teams began playing decade ago. Hamilton is in the middle of toughest part of its schedule as is Chandler. Chandler displayed a much better defense and game plan last week. The Wolves would love to duplicate that success with ball-control led by running back Paul Perkins. That will be difficult with the speed of the Huskies defense. Hamilton features the best defense Chandler has seen or likely will see this season After a slow start, Hamilton quarterback Blake Kemp is clicking on all fronts -- running the option and making good decisions and throws in the passing game. Desert Vista (5-0) at Saguaro (5-0) -- Desert Vista has stymied everyone it has played, but faces a tough customer in Saguaro and its 1,000-yard rusher D.J. Foster, and 1,000-yard passer Luke Rubenzer. Foster is wreaking havoc in similar fashion to last year's quarterback Teddy Ruben in terms of rushing. Foster features a power and speed combination that's fearful. Desert Vista runs the ball effectivlely, added a strong passing game last week and wants to prove its defense is for real. The Thunder get that chance in this one, a matchup of a Divison I title contender and the Division III favorite. Corona del Sol (3-2) at Cibola (5-0) -- Corona del Sol has won games it has the talent to win (Dobson, Westwood and Highland) and lost the ones it didn't (Basha and Desert Vista). Knocking off any unbeaten team at this stage in the season is a feather in a team's cap. Cibola, venturing outside of Yuma competition for the second time this season, always gets up for a game with an East Valley foe. Corona del Sol must put the clamps on Cibola standout Jordan Mitchell, the Raiders best back and a bonafide 1,500-yard rusher. Mitchelll sat out last week's game with Yuma. Williams Field (4-1) at Higley (4-1) -- It's year three of the rivalry, which has Williams Field up, 2-0. It's a matchup of former coaching partners from McClintock -- Williams Field's Steve Campbell and Higley's Eddy Zubey. Both teams have been able to score aplenty. So far the edge defensively goes to Williams Field, which gives the Black Hawks the edge for a third win in as many tries Both teams have a marquee player back from last year -- Higley quarterback Eric Kump and Williams Field running back Alex Howard. Production for both hasn't waned with Kump throwing for 1,153 yards, 17 TDs and just two picks. Howard is averaging 135 yards rushing per game He scored three TDs last week in a 49-3 romp over Amphitheater. The Black Hawks also got a lift from Sean Schweichler, who scored four TDs -- two on the ground , one via reception and one on a punt return. Desert Ridge (4-1) at Red Mountain (3-2) -- Check up time again for Red Mountain, which has lost to Mesquite and Brophy. The Mountain Lions potentially could get on a serious roll if they can pull the upset in this one as their schedule is leaner down the stretch. Desert Ridge opted to go back to Jordan Becerra at quarterback last week and utilize the offense that fueled its run to a state-title game appearance. Becerra and Joey Counts are quite the 1-2 punch. Quarterback-receiver Parker Rasmussen, who started the first four games behind center, has been suspended for this week's game as a result of bumping an official and being ejected from last week's win over Skyline Sahuaro (4-1) at Cienega (5-0) -- Sahuaro tasted defeat for the first time last week, losing by a field goal to 2-3 Catalina Foothills. The task is much tougher in this one with Cienega a legitimate Division II title contender. Cienega is sparked by dual-threat quarterback Michael Archie and Sunnyside transfer Manny Vera. The Bobcats are giving up just 10 points a game thus far. Coolidge (4-1) at Poston Butte (5-0) -- Coolidge possesses a prolific ground attack led by senior running back Seth Ellis, who is 35 yards short of 1,000 for the season. He's already scored 21 TDs as the D-IV Bears go up a notch in foe to D-III in this one. Poston Butte's advantage appears to be its defense and a solid rushing game. If both those facets are working Poston Butte should remain unbeaten. Mesa Mountain View (3-2) at Pinnacle (5-0) -- Mountain View has pieced together a three-game winning streak and gets a shot at one of three unbeaten teams in D-I, Section III. The Toros are getting some consistent production from sophomore quarterback Chase Funk, who threw for a season-best 264 yards and three TDs last week. Funk has developed quite a rapport with 6-4 wide out Joe Clark, who is averaging seven receptions a game. Pinnacle's defense has been a takeaway machine -- 22 in five games. Quarterback Jackson Harley and running back Evan Tompkins make the offense go, one that might be vulnerable if Mountain View can neutralize the run.
