Coach Ted LeClair acknowledged his team has a mountain to climb this season.

The Eagles started the climb with an 11-5 victory over North Pointe Prep.

“We didn’t have a scrimmage, so we had to work out a lot of kinks in the beginning, which we did,” LeClair said. “It’s always good when you can not play your best and still win. So, I am looking forward to see what our boys can do when we have a little more experience under our belt and play a couple of more games.”

Junior Cameron Miller looked strong on the mound with eight strikeouts to go along with two hits and five RBI’S, but Miller wants more.

“My pitching was pretty bad today I’d say,” Miller said. “I walked a lot of guys, strikeouts don’t matter, and we just got to keep the pitch count down and get outs as efficiently possible. I didn’t do that today.”

The Eagles caught fire in the second inning as Miller and senior Gabe Korer drove in two runs each to take a 5-3 lead. They never looked back.  

“There were definitely nerves in the beginning of the game,” junior Daniel Gomez said. “As the game progressed, we settled in and got comfortable enough and that is what it shows on the scoreboard.”

Improvement is the key word for this team. With most players not playing together before this game, it was challenge to get chemistry going.

“We need to work on getting our catcher a little caught up with the rest of the team because he kind of just joined us a few days ago,” LeClair said. “What we really need to do is to be smarter around the bases and we just need to change our approach and understand our situations when we are in the box, counts and swing accordingly. Once we figure that out and have that right approach, we have the talent to barrel the ball up and score a lot of runs.”

The jitters are out of the way and all that is left is to focus on the season. Putting in the work is what every player is preaching.

“We hit well, and we just need to continue better,” junior John Moore said. “This season should be fun, and I look forward to seeing the outcome of this team.”

The remainder of the season comes with its challenges, but the goal remains the same – go to the playoffs.

“We got to stick to the basics,” Gomez said. “There is really nothing complexed to pay attention to. We will win a lot games if we can do that and head to the playoffs.”
